Registration and Advising Tips

Holds: Check your Student Center for holds now. Not right before you register, today! Not all holds are removed instantly. Many students have a hold for "Terms and Conditions" which is a new type of hold. You can log into your MyUW, look on the very top of the page; there will be a button at the top if you still have the hold.

Validate: Use this helpful Student Center feature when you have selected classes. You have the option to validate classes in your cart; it is next to the enroll button. This will give you an opportunity to resolve potential issues. If you have a validation error message, contact the department's enrollment coordinator. Who? When you are in Course Guide, you'll notice the lecture has a hyperlink. Click it. Then you will see information on the class (like how many students can enroll, what is the waitlist capacity, etc). Midway down, there is a section on contacts

I don't know what to take for Biology! November and April are very busy advising times of year due to registration. If you cannot get in to see your advisor, register using your DARS to determine which classes you need. Review Biology major classes on our Resources page to see what is available in your needed categories (i.e., red on DARS). Make an appointment to review your plan and fine-tune if necessary. You can find your advisor's name and contact information in Student Center (look on the right-side information bar).

What should I take outside of Biology? Look at your Gen Eds and select a class meeting one of those requirements. Planning on professional or grad school? Look at their admissions pages and see what non-Bio classes they recommend. Need more ideas? Type topics that interest you in the keyword search of Course Guide or Class Search (e.g.  health, fruit, justice) or, scroll down the newsletter to see some options that may be of interest.

I can't get into the class I wanted. If it is physiology or anatomy, see previous newsletters. For classes with a waitlist, enroll on the waitlist. In the meantime, you should enroll in another class in the event that you don't move off of the waitlist. The back-up class should meet the same requirements if this is your last semester.

What has been your favorite bioscience class so far, and why?
My favorite class at UW was Biochem 501. Personally, as a Biology major, chemistry courses were never my favorite, but taking biochemistry gave me a new appreciation for what they had taught me. It brought together everything I had learned separately in my biology and chemistry courses to explain daily biological processes. It was rewarding to draw upon previously learned material from multiple classes to understand what was being taught.

What class outside of the biosciences has resonated with you the most? What type of students would you encourage to take it as well?
I really enjoyed Social Work 206. Social policy is a huge part of our society. It is very complex in its framework and I don’t think enough emphasis is put on properly educating society about it. I found the class extremely insightful, as it started from the very beginning detailing how exactly the policies came to be and why they are how they are now. Also, the professor is brilliant.

Have you engaged in study abroad? How has it influenced you personally, academically and/or professionally?
Between my junior and senior year, I studied abroad in Thailand with the UW Microbiology and Public Health program. It was one of the biggest highlights of my undergraduate career and something I reference and reflect on often. I highly recommend considering studying abroad to any student. UW offers so many programs all over the world in various topics, and there are scholarships available to help fund your study abroad experience.

What do you wish someone would have shared when you were a freshman?
My freshman year I was more concerned about keeping up with school work than becoming involved on campus. It wasn’t until my sophomore year when I started joining clubs, volunteering, and becoming more involved on campus that I realized what I had been missing out on. Yes, making commitments to participate in clubs and activities takes time away from studying, but it is more time effective in the long run. You will learn more about yourself as a person and what you want to pursue, you will learn about the campus as a whole and what it has to offer, and you will meet new people. The last one is extremely important, as studying with a friend or in a group is a lot more efficient than studying alone. So don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and get involved!

Do you have any other tips for fellow Biology students?
Take advantage of your advisors!!! They are the most helpful, knowledgeable, and resourceful people you will find on campus. Don’t make the mistake of taking the wrong courses and missing deadlines or opportunities. They genuinely want you to succeed, and I guarantee they will know the best way to help you find the path to do so. My advisor introduced and encouraged me to apply to my study abroad program and I am forever grateful to him for that.

Government Resume Writing Clinic

This is a WORKING event. No formal presentation is planned. Instead, students will work collaboratively and with the trainer on resumes they want to submit to federal or state agencies.  Participation is limited to 8-10 students so that everyone can get some personal attention and is by RSVP only. 

Students should make an attempt to put a first draft of a government resume together utilizing the resources available in the Dig Deeper 2 section of the Government/Politics/Policy & Law Career Community Page. DON’T WORRY, IT CAN BE BAD! We’ll make it better together!

Spooner Agricultural Research Station Internship: Seed to Kitchen Collaborative

This position supports the broader mission of the University to provide research and information in agriculture, horticulture and natural resources to Wisconsin residents.
The Seed to Kitchen Collaborative is a collaboration among plant breeders, farmers, chefs and consumers to identify varieties with good performance for direct market organic and low input farmers, and with excellent flavor and quality for local markets.

The intern will have an exceptional professional development opportunity to learn how to manage a research trial, interact with local farmers and other agriculture professionals and would be involved in outreach events including field days and other station programming

Dawson lab in Horticulture Summer and Fall Opportunity

The lab is seeking a student with interests in plant propagation, plant breeding, or crop genetic diversity, to assist with maintenance and breeding of a collection of heirloom and specialty potato varieties.

Regular tasks will include plant micro-propagation in sterile conditions, media preparation, washing lab glassware, greenhouse propagation, and crossing potato varieties. Hours are flexible, but applicants should be available for at least 12-15 hours per week this summer, in blocks of at least 3 hours. The position will continue into the fall semester. 

The ideal applicant has strong interests in biology, including horticulture, genetics or microbiology, with at least 2 years remaining in their undergraduate degree. Experience with sterile laboratory technique would be an advantage. Goldman Lab Plant Breeding Summer Opportunity 

Work with us during the 2018 field season. Our work involves breeding carrot, onion, and table beet in both conventional and organic fields. Our group manages field plots at six locations around Wisconsin from late April through late September. Field work includes tasks like planting, weeding, assembly of crossing cages, thinning, pollinations, seed production, root harvest, data collection, sample collection, and packing roots for storage. Additional tasks include seed cleaning, data entry, and some laboratory work. Students would gain experience in field research and plant breeding.

We provide transportation to all field sites. The majority of the work would take place on weekdays though opportunities for weekend work may occur. Work 20-30 hours/week from May 1 through late September. Pay is $10/hour. If interested in this opportunity, please contact Katharina Wigg at

Nutr Sci 203: Introduction to Global Health

Registration is well underway. Currently the course is set with a prereq of Freshman and Sophomores only. The waitlist will open on Monday, April 23rd and remove all prereqs at that time. Do not email GHC advisor or professors. Your best chance is to get onto the waitlist and then show up on the first day of class if you do not get in before then.GHC is planning a spring section of 203 for Juniors and Seniors only.


S&A PHM 490: Health Equity and Social Justice

This is a 2-credit fall 2018 course. Priority enrollment is given to students currently enrolled in a health science or allied health program. Health Equity & Social Justice is an inter-professional dialogue-based seminar that examines issues of power and oppression as they play out in social identities. It also explores how these identities impact health, health care, and health practice through personal stories and scholarly readings. If you are interested in this course, application is required. Journ 176: Introduction to Sports Communication

This course blended on-line/in-person summer course provides the basics of journalism and public relations for students thinking about a career in keeping the public informed about sports, or who want to learn more about how sports media content is gathered, vetted and distributed. Topics will include game coverage, beat reporting, interviewing and sources, news value, feature writing, placement of sports stories and more. No prerequisite, open to students of all majors. Exploring Discipline-Based Leadership & Mentoring builds on practical peer leadership and mentoring skills, while providing a forum for evaluating and reflecting on personal experiences among a group of peers who challenge and learn from each other as they explore leadership. Class activities are designed to develop critical thinking around student development issues and provide strategies for integrating discussions of diversity, ethics, social justice, community, and civic responsibility into leadership experiences.
